Safety Concerns Escalate in Nigeria Following Large-Scale Abduction of Over 300 Schoolchildren

Armed attackers have kidnapped over 300 pupils and educators in one of the biggest mass kidnappings in recent Nigerian times, as stated by a religious organization on Saturday.

Growing Emergency in School Institutions

The Friday morning raid on St Mary's co-educational school in Niger state happened just days after armed men stormed a secondary school in adjacent Kebbi state, taking 25 girls.

Earlier reports had suggested 227 individuals were taken, but updated numbers emerged after a detailed assessment determined that 303 students and 12 instructors had been kidnapped.

The abducted children, ranging between eight and 18 years, represent nearly 50 percent of the school's total student body of 629.

Official Reaction and Security Measures

State authorities have announced that security departments and police are presently conducting a thorough assessment to verify the precise number of abducted people.

In reaction to the growing safety concerns, the state government has directed the closure of all schools in the state, with neighboring states adopting comparable precautionary actions.

Furthermore, the federal education ministry has directed the provisional shutting of 47 boarding secondary schools across the country.

President Bola Tinubu has postponed overseas commitments, including participation at the G20 summit in Johannesburg, to focus on handling the crisis.

Latest Violent Incidents

The educational institution abductions represent the most recent in a sequence of security breaches that have shaken the country, including an assault on a church in the west of Nigeria where gunmen killed two individuals and seized dozens worshipers during a online broadcast service.

These events have taken place against the background of international focus on Nigeria's safety situation.

Past Context

Nigeria remains traumatized by the legacy of the large-scale kidnapping of nearly 300 female students by extremist group Boko Haram in Chibok over a decade ago, with some of those victims still unaccounted for.

Firsthand Testimonies

In a concerning recording circulated by religious organizations, a upset worker described hearing the sounds of motorcycles and cars before experiencing "violent banging" on multiple gates of the compound.

"Students were crying," the staff member reported, recounting her panic while searching for keys to the area where the screaming was most intense.

The local Catholic authority stated that the "assailants acted violently and without interruption for nearly three hours, moving through dormitories."

Public Reaction and Concerns

At the same time, about 600km away on the periphery of Abuja, worried parents were picking up their children from schools following the closure directive.

One parent, a 40-year-old nurse, voiced her disbelief at the magnitude of the kidnapping, questioning how 300 students could be abducted simultaneously.

She stated that the "government is failing to act to curb insecurity," and voiced approval for international intervention to "salvage this situation."

Continuing Safety Challenges

For a long time, well-equipped bandit groups have been carrying out killings and abductions for money in rural areas of northwest and middle Nigeria, where state presence is minimal.

While nobody has taken credit for the recent incidents, bandit gangs seeking ransom payments often attack schools in countryside locations where security is inadequate.

These gangs maintain bases in extensive forest areas spanning several states in the west of Nigeria.

Although these bandits have no ideological leanings and are primarily driven by financial gain, their growing cooperation with jihadist groups from the north-east has become a major source of worry for authorities and security analysts alike.
