Global Renewable Power Generation Exceeds Coal for the First Time

This historic milestone, the world’s solar and wind farms produced more electricity than coal-fired stations in an unprecedented shift in 2025, signaling a pivotal moment for the worldwide energy sector.

Clean Energy Outpace Power Needs

An in-depth study revealed that over the initial half of 2025, clean power outpaced the increasing global appetite for electricity, causing a modest drop in coal and gas consumption.

Globally produced about 30% more solar power in the initial six months of the year relative to the same period in 2024, satisfying over four-fifths of the worldwide rise in power needs. Wind power grew by approximately 7%, allowing renewables to displace traditional energy in a historic first.

“Solar and wind have expanded fast enough to satisfy the world’s growing appetite for electricity,” stated an expert electricity analyst. This signifies the beginning of a transition where renewable energy is keeping pace with rising needs.”

Regional Impacts and Differences

China and India were primarily driving the rapid growth in renewables, according to the analysis, in contrast with the United States and European Union, which relied more heavily on fossil fuels.

  • The Asian giant installed greater clean power capacity than the rest of the world together, leading to a two percent drop in its consumption of fossil fuels in the first half of the year.
  • The South Asian nation grew its renewable energy by over triple its power needs – being significantly weaker this year – causing its coal and gas usage to fall by 3.1% and thirty-four percent each.

Conversely, demand for power in the United States exceeded its growing renewables sector, causing a seventeen percent rise in coal-based power over the initial six months of the year.

Across Europe, demand showed limited increase relative to the initial six months of last year, but a climate-induced decline in hydro and wind power implied that even fast-rising solar energy was unable to stop fossil fuel generation rising by fourteen percent and 1.1% each.

Projected Growth and Trends

A separate study projected that global clean energy may increase over twofold by the close of 2030, with four-fifths of new clean energy capacity anticipated to come from solar power.

The expansion in global renewable installations in the near future will be dominated by photovoltaic systems – but with hydropower, wind, bioenergy and geothermal each playing a part, too,” commented an influential power authority.

The analysis highlighted that The People’s Republic would remain the largest global growth market for clean energy, with The Republic of India emerging as the second largest throughout the ten-year period.

Alongside growth in established markets, solar is poised to grow rapidly in economies such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and multiple Southeast Asian states,” the expert added.
