Delhi Awakens to Dangerous Pollution Following Festival of Lights

As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that fell into the "severe" category.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Measurements

Various sections of the capital recorded an air quality index exceeding 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the recommended threshold established by the World Health Organization.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, representing 15-20x above healthy levels.

Firecracker Restrictions and New Policy Shifts

Beginning in 2020, authorities had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of pyrotechnics during celebrations due to their major role to the deadly smog that engulfs the capital as the cold season sets in.

Yet earlier this year, the current regional administration approached the supreme court to propose a relaxation of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been doubted by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a balance between "tradition and environment".

Legal Decision and Implementation

To the disappointment of public health and environmental campaigners, judges agreed to the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be used during limited periods throughout the festival.

On Monday night, there was extensive disregard of the regulated periods across the city, with little enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly type.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city showed pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to some of the worst levels recorded during Diwali in at least recent memory.

Regional Effects

The widespread use of fireworks during Diwali also sparked a dispute with neighbouring the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistani the Punjab region partly blaming declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on contaminants originating in neighboring India following the events.

Long-Standing Environmental Problem

Alarmingly severe levels of air contamination in the city have continued as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the atmosphere has been found to increase dramatically to 70% higher the peak readings ever measured in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the globally most contaminated city.

Various Contamination Factors

This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in neighbouring areas of farming communities.

Within these states, agricultural workers regularly burn crop residue to prepare for next season, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air descends.

Public Health and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the roughly thirty-three million people residing in the Delhi area is substantial, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes elevated rates of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to oncological diseases.

Air quality crisis is estimated to be causing 10,000 premature fatalities each year in the city.
