The child of ex- South African Head of State Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the start of her court case in the harbor city of Durban city.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43, is being tried over comments she published on online platforms four years ago during deadly protests in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her dad.
A seven-day period of chaos in various areas of the country in July 2021, including plundering and arson, left at least 300 deceased and led to damage worth an estimated 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2bn).
She has been accused of encouraging this unrest and is charged with charges of incitement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.
History of the Case
The protests were centered in the areas of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and came after the ex-leader's apprehension for disobeying a court order to appear as a witness at an probe into claims of corruption while he was in power.
She has consistently denied the charges against her, with her legal representative earlier describing the state's legal argument as insufficient.
She has also repeatedly said the accusations against her were an effort to settle political disputes with her dad after he founded his own political party and competed against the ANC.
Support and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the foundation, which stated the case was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the former president and his relatives.
A handful of backers from her political organization, her party, gathered outside the judicial building, while her parent and other group representatives were present at the court sessions inside.
The defendant's representatives has maintained that the evidence presented by government lawyers is inadequate and fails to provide concrete proof for a criminal finding.
Main Aspects of the Legal Proceedings
- Digital statements from the past form the foundation of the prosecution's evidence
- Deadly demonstrations in recent years resulted in major fatalities and financial damage
- The individual on trial is charged with multiple charges of provocation to unrest
- Court proceedings are anticipated to carry on for multiple days
The trial continues as all parties present their evidence before the judicial authority in what is expected to be a highly monitored court case with substantial political ramifications for South Africa.
